👥 Local People of the Periyar Region
The region surrounding Periyar Tiger Reserve is not only rich in biodiversity but also in cultural diversity, shaped by the harmonious coexistence of tribal communities and non-tribal local populations. These people have played a key role in conservation, sustainable tourism, and the cultural identity of Thekkady and the greater Periyar landscape.
🧑🏽🌾 Who Are the Local People?
The local communities include:
Tribal Groups: Such as the Mannans, Uralis, Malayarayans, Paliyans, Malayans, and Malampandarams who live in and around the Reserve. They are traditionally dependent on forest-based livelihoods and now also serve as eco-tourism guides, forest watchers, and artisans.
Settled Farmers: Smallholder families who live in nearby towns and villages like Kumily, Vandiperiyar, and Murikkady. They primarily cultivate spices, including cardamom, pepper, and tea.
Artisans and Traders: Engaged in handicrafts, spice trade, local markets, and tourism-related services.
Hospitality Workers: Locals who work in resorts, homestays, restaurants, and tour operations, offering warm hospitality to visitors.
🤝 Their Role in Eco-Tourism & Conservation
Local people are actively involved in eco-development programs, anti-poaching activities, and sustainable tourism services.
Many serve as nature guides, boat operators, craft makers, cooks, and cultural performers for visitors.
This partnership has helped reduce forest dependency and has created alternative livelihoods that align with conservation goals.
🎭 Cultural Contributions
Local communities celebrate traditional festivals, music, dance (like tribal drumming and folk dances), and rituals tied to nature worship.
Visitors can explore local life through village walks, plantation visits, and cultural programs.
🌍 Sustainable Living
Through government support, NGOs, and tourism revenue, many local families are part of programs that focus on:
Organic farming
Waste management
Eco-education
