🥋 Kerala Martial Art Show – Kalaripayattu
📍 Kadathanadan Kalari Centre, Thekkady
🕕 Daily Show Time: 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Welcome to the World of Kalaripayattu

Kalaripayattu—the oldest martial art in the world—is Kerala’s legendary contribution to global martial arts culture. Often hailed as the “Mother of All Martial Arts”, it combines art, science, and medicine in a unique psycho-physical discipline.

🌿 Origin & Legend

  • Mythological Roots: Created by Sage Parasurama, the warrior saint and incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who reclaimed the land of Kerala from the Arabian Sea by throwing his axe.

  • Sacred Lineage: Parasurama taught Kalaripayattu to 21 Brahmin disciples in 42 established Kalaris (training schools).

  • Connection to Kung-Fu: The roots of Kung-Fu trace back to Bodhidharma, an Indian Buddhist monk and Kalaripayattu master who traveled to China.

🛡️ Training & Philosophy

The training in Kalaripayattu is designed to achieve total control over the mind and body. It incorporates unarmed techniques, weaponry, flexibility training, and inner discipline.

Levels of Training:

  1. Basic Level: Mastery of unarmed techniques and body balance.

  2. Intermediate Level: Enhances agility, coordination, and flexibility.

  3. Advanced Level: Training with weapons like sticks and small blades.

  4. Instructor Level: Proficiency in sword and shield, spear, and the Urumi (spring sword).

The holistic approach ensures that weapons become an extension of the body, guided by mental focus, and balanced for both offensive and defensive combat.

🏛️ The Kuzhi Kalari Experience

At Kadathanadan Kalari Centre, the art is performed in a traditional Kuzhi Kalari—a sunken training arena, 4 feet deep, 42 feet long, and 21 feet wide.
“Kuzhi” means “hollow” in Malayalam.

  • A specially designed gallery ensures that spectators can enjoy an unobstructed and safe view of this spectacular performance.

🌟 Why Watch?

Witness an ancient warrior tradition filled with swift movements, acrobatic feats, and synchronized weapon combat. It’s not just a martial art—it’s a dance, a discipline, a culture, and a living legend.
